615-160 Tools of Analysis

Note:

This subject or 618-131 Discrete Mathematics (Advanced) (1996 Handbook) is required for the completion of the BIS. Students may not gain credit for both this subject and 618-131. Students enrolled in the single BSc or a combined BSc course will receive Science credit for the completion of this subject.

Credit Points:

12.5

Timetable:

Semester 2

Contact:

Three one hour lectures, a one hour tutorial, and two hours problem solving per week

Objectives:

At the completion of this subject, students should have:

  • knowledge of, and the ability to use, a set of tools useful for analysing information requirements, uses, and flows and information systems in organisations;

  • an understanding of the discrete mathematics that underlies some of the technical aspects of organisational processes and information systems.

Content:

This subject provides students with a foundation of descriptive and analytical tools useful for understanding and communicating about informational, organisational, and computational processes. Topics include counting, propositional logic, truth tables, sampling, and inference; information and process mapping; and program execution time and parallel computation.

Assessment:

One written exam of up to three hours; individual and group assignments which together are expected to take about 25 hours. The weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
