610-221 Organic Chemistry

Credit cannot be gained for both 610-220 and 610-221.

Contact:

39 lectures (3 per week), 45 hours practical work, 8 tutorials

Objectives:

On completion of 610-221, the student should, in addition to the objectives listed for 610-220 Organic Chemistry :

Comprehend:

  • the main classes of biologically important organic compounds, some of the important aspects of pharmaceutical organic chemistry.

Content:

First 20 lectures as for 610-220 Organic Chemistry plus: molecules of biological and environmental importance, pharmaceutical organic chemistry.

Assessment:

A 3-hour end-of-semester examination; a short written test on the practical component. Practical work will be continuously assessed, and the practical work must be completed satisfactorily before credit can be granted.
