606-308 Cell Biology of Protists

Cell Biology 606-205 and 606-206 and /or Botany 606-202.

Contact:

26 lectures (2 a week), four 3-hour practical classes and a 1-hour tutorial

Objectives:

Students should gain:

  • knowledge of the world of microalgae;

  • develop skills in interpreting microscopical data (particularly electron micrographs);

  • gain understanding of the complex behaviour in live cells; how cell structure correlates with function and behaviour;

  • gain understanding of how cellular structure has evolved and thus can be useful phylogenetically.

Content:

Cell division and differentiation in algal, fungal and lower plant cells. Nature and function of cell organelles. Evolution of cellular systems. The creation of form and structure by cells.

Assessment:

A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination. Practical books marked at the end of each practical class.
