606-204 Plant Ecology

Biology 606-141 and 600-142 (Before 1996: 600-101). 600-201 is strongly recommended.

Timetable:

Semester 1

Contact:

26 lectures, 2 a week, 12 hours of excursions and 13 tutorials

Objectives:

Students should gain:

  • a knowledge of the ecology of Australian plants and plant communities;

  • an understanding of the ecosystem concept, and the structure and physiology of ecosystems;

  • an understanding of basic population and community ecology;

  • an understanding of local and global environmental issues;

  • an ability to synthesise, interpret and discuss current scientific literature.

Content:

Australian plant communities, plant population dynamics, plant productivity, plants and fire, plants and aridity, plant-animal interactions. Issues such as greenhouse, salinity, die back, logging, fires.

Assessment:

One 3-hour written examination on lecture and tutorial topics at the end of the subject; a report of 2000 words maximum on the excursion.
