606-201 Plant Structure and Physiology

Prerequisite/s:

Biology 600-141 and 600-142 (Before 1996: 600-101) and one of Chemistry 610-121 + 610-122, or 610-141 + 610-142, or 610-161 + 610-162.

Timetable:

Semester 1

Contact:

30 lectures (2 per week with 4 special lectures), 36 hours of practical (3 hours a week)

Objectives:

Students should gain:

  • a knowledge of plant structure and physiological function in relation to the environment;

  • skills in designing experiments and in studying the anatomy and function of plants.

Content:

Anatomy of plant cells, tissues and organs. Photosynthesis, water relations, plant nutrition, secondary metabolism, growth and development. Emphasis is given to crop and native plants.

Assessment:

One 3-hour written examination at the end of the subject; up to 3000 words of practical assignments.
