600-203 Environmental Measurement

Credit Points:

12.5

Coordinator:

Dr M A Burgman and Mr D Morgan

Prerequisite/s:

619-100 Experimental Design and Analysis. 619-200 Applied Statistics, and 600-141 and 600-142 Biology would be advantageous.

Timetable:

Semester 2

Contact:

26 lectures (2 per week) and 26 hours of practical/tutorials, and two days of field work

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • understand the use of basic methods of sampling theory;

  • be familiar with field procedures for surveying the physical environment, terrestrial fauna and flora, and freshwater and marine biota;

  • be able to apply strategies for efficient and effective estimation;

  • be able to design routine environmental monitoring and assessment programs;

  • be able to make use of appropriate techniques to explore environmental data sets.

Content:

Sampling theory for environmental problems, stratification, ratio and regression estimation, classification and ordination of environmental data, methods for dealing with spatial variation and autocorrelation, field monitoring and 'baseline' studies, efficient survey methods for terrestrial and aquatic environments, biotic and abiotic indices of water quality, univariate and multivariate indicators.

Assessment:

A 3 hour written examination at the end of the semester, and continuous assessment reports and practical reports. Both the examination and the continuous assessment must be completed satisfactorily before credit can be granted for the subject.
