536-305 Project in Physiology (Advanced)

Physiology 536-301 or 536-302 or 536-303. Enrolment requires the permission of the Head of the Department.

104 hours practical work, 13 seminars and 26 hours of assignment work

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • gain in-depth research experience in a single area (of choice) in Physiology;

  • develop a strong background in hypothesis formulation and testing by experimental procedures;

  • develop skills of interaction, communication and understanding of contemporary physiology.

Content:

Study with a researcher in the Department, by mutual consent. The research subject will be worked out between the student and the coordinator; students should see the coordinator during the first semester to discuss potential research areas. Attendance at weekly Departmental Seminars with further discussion and reading around two selected seminars, and 1 visit to the laboratory of an eminent physiologist are required.

Assessment:

A written report of up to 5000 words including experimental plan, experimental work, data analysis, an written assignment of up to 3000 words based on the research after the laboratory visit, and one page summaries of two selected seminars.
