Objectives:

By the end of the subject students should comprehend and be able to explain:

  • the fundamental concepts of virology, with particular reference to the replication, pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis and control of viruses of humans;

  • the biochemical and physiological mechanisms that underpin our understanding of these topics;

  • the application of this knowledge and understanding of principles and mechanisms to the solution of everyday practical problems.

Content:

Structure, composition, taxonomy and replication of viruses of humans. Cultivation, assay and laboratory diagnosis of human viruses. Viral genetics, evolution, ecology and epidemiology. Pathogenesis of human viral infections, including determinants of viral virulence and host resistance. Antiviral immunity. Viral persistence. Oncogenic viruses. Control of viral infection, including immunisation and chemotherapy. Models of human viral diseases.

Assessment:

A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination.
