516-203 Ocular Anatomy

Biology 600-141 and 600-142 (Before 1996: 600-101 Biology), Chemistry 610-120 + 610-140, or 610-160, Physics 640-120 + 640-140 or 640-160. Available to Bachelor of Optometry students only.

16 lectures and 8 hours laboratory work

Objectives:

By the end of the subject the student should:

  • comprehend the anatomy and microstructure of the eye and orbital contents; the organisation of the eye and orbital contents; the development of the eye;

  • develop observational and organisational skills to identify the structures of the eye; communication skills (written and oral) to describe the normal structure of the eye and orbital contents;

  • appreciate the common occurrence of anatomical variation of the eye and orbital contents; the scientific basis of knowledge of eye structure.

Content:

The anatomy of the skull, with particular emphasis on the orbital cavity, the orbital contents and the external features of the eye. The histology of the ocular tissues. The anatomy of the brain, with particular emphasis on the visual pathway. The embryological development of the eye together with developmental anomalies.

Assessment:

A 2-hour written examination (60%), a 30-minute practical examination (30%), and assessment of assignment work derived from practical classes (10%).
