Objectives: | This subject aims to introduce students to the study of the light and electron microscopic structure of normal mammalian cells, tissues and organs and to develop skills in the identification and interpretation of histological sections and electron micrographs. The subject provides the background for more advanced studies in cell biology and pathology. It also complements studies in physiology and biochemistry at the 200-level. Upon completion of this subject students should:

Content: | Structure of cells, tissues and organs with emphasis on the relationship between structure and function. Light and electron microscopic structure of cells, epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissues, blood and blood vessels, lymphoid organs, exocrine and endocrine glands, alimentary, urinary, respiratory and reproductive systems. Laboratory work based on examination of histological preparations and electron micrographs.
Assessment: | Continuous assessment in practical classes throughout the semester, a 2-hour written examination at the end of semester that will include multiple choice questions, and a 30-minute practical examination, also at the end of the semester.
