740-462 Dissertation

Prerequisite/s:

740-359 Musicological Research Method and permission of the Dean. Students are expected to have a dissertation topic approved by the lecturer in charge, and a supervisor arranged, before being allowed to enrol in this subject.

Regular consultation with the appointed supervisor during fourth year

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have conceived, planned and executed a substantial research project; demonstrated a capacity to think originally and independently within the chosen area of musicology; shown a command of both standard literature and writings at the current scholarly forefront of their chosen field; shown the ability to apply musicological research methodologies rigorously and appropriately.

Content:

The research for, and writing of, an 8000 to 10,000-word dissertation on a topic approved by the supervisor and the coordinator.

Assessment:

Two bound, typewritten copies of the dissertation are to be submitted for examination not later than the first day of the second semester examination period. The final mark for this course will be determined solely by the dissertation (100%).
