Contact:

Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week for one semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have an extensive knowledge of the works of the period and their place in society, a working knowledge of the musicological scholarship, theoretical and manuscript sources for the topics studied, and a capacity to evaluate modern performances of works of this period.

Content:

Study of representative works from the period circa 1740-1800 and the ideas of Classicism as they impacted on music.

Assessment:

A descriptive analysis (10%); research essay of up to 3000 words (40%); end of semester examination (50%).
