Subject Description:

This subject covers the following: common medical problems and diseases, diagnosis and treatment; and diseases of particular importance to dentists, including infective endocarditis, hepatitis, bleeding diseases and acute and chronic cardiac and respiratory disorders.

On completion of this subject, students should:

Comprehend: common presentations of medical disease; the use of investigations; the uses and side effects of drugs.

Have developed: an understanding of the clinical features and natural history of medical conditions; skills in communicating with and relating to patients; the ability to take a comprehensive history; the ability to formulate possible differential diagnoses; an understanding of the possible use of investigations in diagnosis and management of disease; an understanding of prognosis.

Appreciate: the effect of illness on the social, occupational and recreational activities of patients.

Assessment:

A 2-hour written examination and a clinical examination at the end of the year.
