Subject Description: | This subject will further develop practical skills in manipulative physiotherapy in the management of musculoskeletal, sporting and occupational injuries. The emphasis will be on the perception of normal and abnormal accessory joint movement, awareness of contra-indications and the signs of joint irritability and instability, specificity in the manipulative physiotherapy approach and the ability to select and execute appropriate techniques. Content includes the physiotherapy management of muscle, vertebral and peripheral joint and neural tissue injuries; the notion of 'joint feel' and the rationale of systematic and differential assessment, treatment and clinical reasoning. Highly skilled soft tissue and joint mobilisation and manipulations will be taught, including the use of high velocity thrust techniques and neuromeningeal techniques. | |
Assessment: | Continuous assessment employing mastery learning (10%); and practical skills examination (90%). | |
