Subject Description: | This subject builds on the knowledge and skills taught in Research Methods 1. Students will increase their understanding of, and facility with, the design and analysis techniques introduced in Research Methods 1, as well as covering issues such as ethics in research, reliability and validity of measurement, factorial ANOVA and introduction to multivariate techniques. Theoretical and practical applications of specific research skills such as the research proposal, the literature review, scientific writing styles and single-case research designs will also be presented. On completion of this subject, students should: Comprehend: the role of statistics in research; the differences between types of study design; the importance of reliability and validity in measurement; the conditions required for the various analytical techniques; ethical considerations in conducting research; the role of research in physiotherapy practice; the importance of clear communication of research reports Have developed: an ability to identify a research issue and design a study which would answer the question of interest; literature searching skills; the ability to interpret research papers; the ability to use a computer to solve a range of statistical problems; scientific writing skills in reporting research Appreciate: the importance of scientific inquiry for the development of the physiotherapy profession. | |
Assessment: | Written Assignments (40%) and research proposal (60%). | |
