Subject Description:

The role and responsibilities of the physiotherapist and physiotherapy in the health care system. On completion of this seminar series, students should comprehend issues related to the area of professional practice and management which includes the ethics of the physiotherapy profession, the need for the development of management skills; team functioning, time management, new program development, group dynamics, assertiveness and conflict resolution, teaching, presentation and supervision and to have developed skills in resourcing information relating to health issues. In the sociocultural context of health the seminars include the links between health and illness and sociocultural and economic factors; environmental factors in health; the principles of public health including the distribution and determinants of disease in human populations; the role of Government in Health. Occupational health addresses the physiotherapist in occupational risk identification and management, the theory of ergonomics; the role of Government regulatory bodies and statutory authorities in occupational health. Ergonomic assessment including practical task/job analysis and work site modification. The particular issues in women's health require the student to comprehend basic physiotherapy skills used in treatment and childbirth education in obstetrics and gynaecology including anatomy and physiology pertaining to pregnancy, parturition and the puerperium; medical and surgical gynaecology, including incontinence and fitness in the childbearing year.

Assessment:

Two tutorial presentations (15% each) and written assignments (70%). Topics to be studied include: Sociocultural Context of Health; Occupational Health; Women's Health; Professional Practice & Management.
