Subject Description: | Students will be introduced to the principles of verbal and non-verbal communication skills and to a number of the issues surrounding interpersonal processes in physiotherapy. By the end of the subject, students will have demonstrated the ability to conduct a physiotherapy interview with due attention to the development of rapport and the transmission of information. Students will have developed an appreciation of a range of issues relating to the treatment of particular client populations. Students will be encouraged to formulate and articulate their own developing views on these issues. Each week, students will be presented with either a seminar on a particular issue, or a lecture-tutorial workshop on a communication microskill. Outside these hours, students will be expected to prepare a short videotape of themselves conducting an interview. | |
Assessment: | Satisfactory participation in tutorial exercises and satisfactory performance on a videotaped interview. A 2000 word essay based on one of the presented seminars to be submitted in the last week of semester (35%) and a 1.5 hour end-of-semester exam covering communication skills and brief notes on each of the presented seminars (65%). | |
