Subject Description:

This course forms the first of a three stage sequence of training in research methods in physiotherapy. Content covered will include: criteria for evaluating published research, types of research designs, internal and external validity, descriptive statistics, measurement in physiotherapy, Z-scores, confidence intervals, significance testing, tests of differences between groups, and tests of relationships between variables.

On completion of this subject, students should:

Comprehend: The principles of research methods and examples of their application in clinical research and practice.

Have Developed: Skills in statistical computing and in critically evaluating published research.

Assessment:

Assignments (30%) and 1.5 hour examination (70%).
