513-202 Electrotherapy

Coordinator:

Professor J McMeeken

Timetable:

All Year

Contact:

Equivalent of one hour lecture and 90-minutes of practical classes a week

Subject Description:

On completion of this subject students should comprehend the requirements for electrophysical agents in management of patients; the necessity of safety in patient management and equipment operation; resaons for agent selection; the need to evaluate the results of treatment and continuing advances in electrotherapy. Safe procedures in the practical application of electrophysical agents, experience in recording of treatments, the collection and interpretation of clinical data and the ability to maintain equipment will be developed. The subject integrates knowledge of chemistry, physics, physiology, anatomy and pathology in the selection of electrophysical agents and reinforces the importance of scientific attitudes of inquiry and critical analysis in the practice of electrotherapy. The principles and practice of treatment and diagnosis by thermal, electrical, mechanical forms of energy and the effects of these forms of energy on pathological processes is addressed. The agents are considered in terms of physics, biophysics, physiological effects, indications, contra-indications, dosage, principles and techniques of application, recording and care of the apparatus. Theoretical considerations will normally precede practical classes. This subject commences the integration of the theory and practice of electrotherapy with the application to selected clinical conditions in all age groups.

Assessment:

A 2-hour written examination (40%) and a 30-minute practical examination (60%).
