513-200 Applied Anatomy and Kinesiology 2

Subject Description:

This subject aims to further develop knowledge of normal movement and the relationship between structure and function. Students will study the kinematics of normal human walking, including the role of muscles in producing and controlling body motion, and the effect on walking of loss of joint range of motion or muscle weakness. They will be expected to develop skill in the observation and analysis of normal and selected examples of abnormal walking. Students will also be introduced to the structure and function of the joints and muscles controlling posture and movement of the vertebral column, and the rationale underpinning safe manual handling practice. Additional topics include an advanced study of selected joints of the upper and lower limbs, and the mechanics of respiration. This subject will be taught in conjunction with Anatomy 2 and Physiotherapy Principles and Practice 2.

Assessment:

2-hour written examination (70%), a 30-minute practical examination (15%) and a 1500 word assignment (15%).
