512-021 Behavioural Science

Subject Description:

This subject introduces students to major areas of psychology as applied to medical practice. The content is divided into four major blocks: (i) Psychological Assessment: how do you know a patient has a problem and how can psychology help to assess the patient and his/her problem? (ii) Abnormal Psychology: an introduction to some major psychological and psychiatric disorders. (iii) Brain and Behaviour: an introduction to neuropsychology. (iv) The Psychology of Medical Practice: The contribution of psychology to understanding illness and disease and its role in treatment. At the end of the subject students will have a good understanding of major concepts and findings in psychology that they will be able to apply to their future practice of medicine.

Assessment:

One 2000 word essay (25%), a tutorial-based research project (15%) and a 3 hour written examination (60%).
