Subject Description: | This subject focuses on the delivery of minimal intervention strategies in the prevention of dental caries and periodontal conditions. Topics covered include: records and patient information; local anaesthesia; polishing restorations and overhang removal; special areas in dentistry; diet analysis and counselling; and clinical photography. On completion of this subject, the student should: Comprehend: the philosophy of total oral health care for each patient; the interaction of dental auxiliary care with general and speciality care in the overall treatment plan for the individual; and the limitations of particular treatment modalities. Develop skills in working as a member of a comprehensive health team; in communicating with the patient, parents, the dentist and other health providers about the patient's oral health status, treatment options and potential outcomes. Have developed skills: in administration of local analgesia; in recording dental information, including periodontal charting; in polishing, restorations and the removal of overhangs; and in diet record taking and counselling. Appreciate the roles and responsibilities of dental auxiliaries in comprehensive total patient care. | |
Assessment: | One 2-hour written examination (50%), one 2-hour practical examination (40%), and one 15-minute viva voce examination (10%) at the end of first semester. A pass is required in the written and practical examinations for an overall pass in the subject. | |
