511-207 Management of Compromised Patients

Subject Description:

This subject covers topics dealing with the management of patients with a range of disabilities.

On completion of this subject, the student should:

Comprehend: the behavioural and management aspects of people with chronic and acute medical problems, physical, sensory or intellectual disabilities, and of the homebound, hospitalised and institutionalised; and the disease processes related to the dental management of patients with medical conditions and the systemic consequences of oral conditions.

Appreciate the diversity of people within the community and the responsibility and problems in delivering dental care to them. Have developed sufficient technical skills to provide recognition of oral abnormalities, oral hygiene instruction, and calculus and plaque removal to a range of patients with disabilities.

Assessment:

One 2-hour written examination at the end of second semester (50%); and written assignments and practical reports throughout the year (50%).
