Subject Description: | This subject covers the following areas: preventive dentistry and community dental health; growth studies; clinical dental sciences; dental materials science; cariology; oral function and occlusion; oral biology; operative dentistry; and periodontology. On completion of this subject, students should: Comprehend: the principles of the relationship between oral health, behaviour and oral diseases; the processes of somatic, physiological and psychological growth and development; the properties and uses of dental materials; the range of oral functions and the principles involved in protecting oral tissues against diseases and the maintenance of oral functional integrity. Have developed skills: in understanding and counselling people; in assessing growth and development; in using dental materials; in identifying oral functions; in intercepting diseases in the periodontium, enamel, dentine and pulp and the effects of partial edentulousness; in the prevention of sports injuries. Appreciate: the importance of history-taking, diagnosis and records for success in patient care; the principles of clinical practice; the implications of behaviour in the delivery of dental care; the desirability of the maintenance of oral health in treated patients. | |
Assessment: | A 2-hour written examination at the end of each semester (35% each); written assignments and laboratory reports during the year (20%) and clinical and practical work assignments throughout the year (10%). Viva voce examinations in special cases. Students will be permitted to proceed to clinical work ONLY after having satisfactorily completed the preclinical units. | |
