730-437 Law and Discrimination

Subject Description:

A study of discrimination and laws designed to combat discrimination in Australia. The course will examine theories of equality and discrimination and theoretical frameworks for understanding anti-discrimination legislation, as well as empirical material on various forms of discrimination and harassment (including that based on sex, race, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, age, religion, and intersectional discrimination). In light of this material, it will then survey and assess the Commonwealth and Victorian anti-discrimination legislation, in terms of its conceptual underpinnings, structure, procedures and practical operation. The legislation will also be compared with other avenues for addressing discrimination, such as industrial relations and affirmative action provisions.

Assessment:

Four Reflective Papers 1000 words each (40%) and Research Essay 3000 words (30%) and Take Home Exam (30%).
