730-356 Current Constitutional Questions

Subject Description:

A examination of a range of key constitutional questions for Australia, with international comparisons where appropriate. Topics for 1997 include republicanism; executive power; international affairs; protection of rights; role of the judiciary; aboriginal reconciliation; the structures and principles of federalism; and constitutional change. Teaching is discussion based and all topics are approached through problems or issues to be resolved. Practical questions for advising and the conduct of constitutional litigation also are included and students are encouraged to make maximum use of information technology.

Assessment:

Final Exam 3 hours (100%) or, with the approval of the Coordinator, research assignment (10,000 words) (100%).
