Objectives:

At the conclusion of this subject the student should have:

• a good understanding of the diversity of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications;

• a basic knowledge of the system design and development process;

• an introductory understanding of the institutional and management issues affecting GIS implementation;

• developed practical skills in the use of current GIS technology.

Content:

Application Areas: Introduction to typical application areas including cadastral records; land information; facilities management; urban planning; land use and agriculture; natural resource management; environmental monitoring; marketing and demographic studies, defence and emergency service requirements.

System planning and implementation: Gaining management support; determining system requirements; evaluation of alternative systems and bench marking; pilot projects; costs/benefit analyses; system implementation and acquisition planning; the operational system.

Management issues: Data accuracy and quality; data ownership and custodianship; data access and liability; GIS standards; the future of GIS.
