436-468 Materials and the Environment

Objectives:

On completion students should have knowledge of the place of materials in the manufacturing and consumption cycle and comprehend the ways in which material usage can impact on the environment, production workers and end users.

Content:

The use of materials in the manufacturing process. The relationship of the materials required for manufacture to new manufacturing processes. Net shape processes. Efficiency in energy and material usage, lightweight materials. Reduced environmental impact through increased production efficiency, improved quality control and product liability. Conservation and recycling of materials. Health factors in the processing. forming and use of materials. Degradation and corrosion of materials under service conditions.

Assessment:

A two-hour end of semester examination and practical work to a maximum of 5000 words or equivalent.
