436-278 Civil Engineering Materials Elective

Credit Points:

7.1

Coordinator:

Mr Graham Pratt

Prerequisite/s:

421-278 Materials (Civil and Environmental Engineering)

Timetable:

Semester 2

Contact:

29 hours of lectures and tutorials plus 10 hours of laboratory work

Objectives:

To give students a basic familiarity with the most common polymer, ceramic and composite materials to complement the knowledge of other materials gained in 421-278 Materials. To develop further an appreciation of the interrelationship between the structure, processing and properties of materials and of key factors in the selection of appropriate materials for specific applications.

Content:

Structure and properties of ceramics and polymers. Rational mechanical design data for polymer and composites. Materials failure analysis. Case studies in materials selection and utilisation which illustrate the interdependence between component function, material properties, manufacturing processes and design.

Assessment:

One two hour written examination (80%), practical and laboratory reports to a maximum of 30 pages (20%).
