436-226 Engineering Design and Materials 1E - Basic Concepts in Engineering Design and Materials Selection (Environmental)

Credit Points:

7.1

Coordinator:

Dr J. G. Weir and Dr K. Xia

Prerequisite/s:

436-105 Engineering Communications, 436-103 Engineering Mechanics or 421-103 Engineering Statics and 100-level Mathematics.

Timetable:

Semester 2

Contact:

13 hours of lectures and 26 hours of tutorial work

Objectives:

Upon completion students will:

  • comprehend fundamental concepts of engineering design through various stages of the design process: problem formulation and structuring, ideation, decision making, and communication with special emphasis on those related to environmental engineering;

  • have developed an awareness of the integrative nature of engineering design through the experience of balancing a range of factors including uncertainties related to the environment;

  • have observed the close interrelation between the properties of engineering materials and the design process.

Content:

General approach to design problems. Invention, analysis, decision making. Objectives, criteria and constraints. Design strategies. Technical, ergonomic, environment and economic factors. Appraisal of benefit and cost. Fault and failure analysis. Probability, uncertainty, assessment of risk and externalities. Use of computers in engineering design and materials selection. Interfacing geometric and mathematical models, sensitivity analyses, combinatorial search. Rational approaches to the selection of engineering materials from first principles.

Assessment:

Practical work, projects and reports not exceeding 30 pages; a two-hour examination.
