26 hours of lectures and 13 hours of tutorials and project work

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should:

  • be able to understand the basic concepts of gate level logic circuits;

  • understand the operation of TTL, ECL and CMOS gates;

  • understand the basics of real time computer systems;

  • be able to design computer peripheral interfaces;

  • understand the operation of Analog to Digital Converters;

  • understand the architecture of 8, 16 and 32 bit processors;

  • be able to develop microprocessor software.

Content:

Logic gate circuits: TTL, ECL, CMOS. Design of systems with embedded microprocessors or microcontrollers. Introduction to real time systems. Interrupts, DMA controllers, disk controllers, ADC's and DAC's. Microprocessor and microcontroller program development using C.

Assessment:

A two-hour examination; practice classes, tests, assignments and project reports, not exceeding 20 pages.
