431-223 Telecommunication Networks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should: understand the basic methods of operation of modern communications networks used for voice transmission and for data transmission. appreciate the techniques necessary for the design of telecommunications and computer communications networks at the data link layer and network layer.

Content:

Data transmission: Link level protocols, the 7 layer ISO/OSI model, examples of protocols. Multiple access techniques: FDMA and TDMA. Packet switching: Routing and flow control. Circuit switching: Network topologies. Design of switching networks, space division and time division switching, practical switching systems. Call processing. Signalling for circuit-switched networks: Common channel signalling, signalling system number 7. Local area networks: Random access protocols - ALOHA, slotted ALOHA, and CSMA/CD. Controlled access protocols - token ring and token bus. Mobile communication networks: Principles of mobile communications. Frequency reuse, spectral efficiency, handover, interaction with the fixed network. Standards for mobile communications, with emphasis on GSM. Signalling for mobile communications.

Assessment:

A 2-hour examination; practice classes, tests, assignments and project reports, not exceeding 20 pages.
