431-221 Fundamentals of Signals and Systems

Credit Points:

7.1

Prerequisite/s:

431-103 Electrical Engineering 1, 421-204 Maths for Engineers 2.1B or equivalent, 431-210 Networks 2.

Corequisite/s:

421-205 Maths for Engineers 2.2 or equivalent.

Timetable:

Semester 2

Contact:

26 hours of lectures and 13 hours of tutorials and project work

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should:

  • have an understanding of the concept of signals and systems and its relevance in electrical engineering;

  • understand the basic time domain and frequency domain methods for signals and systems and be able to use these to perform basic modelling and analysis of signals and systems;

  • be familiar with the computer softwares for simulation of signals and systems;

  • understand the methods of amplitude (AM), frequency (FM) and phase modulation, and their application to the transmission of information bearing signals;

  • understand the basic concepts of feedback control systems, and classical control methods for analysis of time response, frequency response, and stability of simple control systems.

Content:

Fundamentals: Signals and systems and their representations. Impulse response and convolution. Fourier analysis of continuous signals and systems. Time response and frequency response. Bode diagrams. Filtering and frequency selective filters. Laplace transform and transfer functions. MATLAB for simulation and analysis of signals and systems.

Communications: Amplitude, frequency and phase modulation and demodulation. Frequency division multiplexing. Comparison of modulation systems.

Control systems: Feedback control systems, Block diagrams, Transient response and steady state response, Stability, Root locus, Nyquist plots and Nyquist criterion.

Assessment:

A two-hour examination; practice classes, tests, assignments and project reports, not exceeding 20 pages.
