421-410 Structural Engineering

42 hours of lectures and 21 hours of tutorials in each semester with 16 hours of laboratory work in the second semester

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course students should be able to; analyse for the internal actions produced in determinate and indeterminate truss and frame structures and the resultant deformations associated with a variety of loading states using both manual and computer aided methods of analysis, understand plastic behaviour and collapse analysis theory, design simple structural elements (such as slabs, beams, columns, ties and connections) in steel, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete (as applicable) in accordance with the appropriate Standard codes of practice, and understand the principles of concrete technology.

Content:

Linear structural analysis. Computer applications in design. Concrete structures and concrete technology. Steel structures, connections and welding technology. Non-elastic and plastic behaviour and collapse analysis.

Assessment:

Two examinations; one two-hour at the end of Semester one and one three-hour at the end of Semester two (85%). Practical work and tests during the year (15%).
