421-407 Structural Engineering B (Combined Course)

18 hours of lectures, 9 practice classes and 6 hours of practical work

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course students should be able to; analyse for the internal actions produced in determinate and indeterminate truss and frame structures and the resultant deformations associated with a variety of loading states using both simple manual methods of analysis and computer modelling techniques, understand plastic behaviour and collapse analysis theory and design simple structural elements (such as beams, columns, and connections) in steel, in accordance with the appropriate Standard codes of practice.

Content:

Steel structures, connections and welding technology. Non-elastic and plastic behaviour and collapse analysis.

Assessment:

a two-hour examination (85%) and practical work (15%).
