421-352 Construction Engineering

Objectives:

At the completion of this subject the student should:

  • understand the role that a well-planned site investigation plays in construction methods;

  • have been introduced to construction practices including equipment, techniques and applications;

  • have an understanding of the application of engineering design to construction practice.

Content:

  • Site investigation;

  • Construction systems including foundations, cofferdams, earthworks, ground support, falsework and scaffolding, formwork, plant and equipment;

  • Design aspects of construction systems, pavements and temporary works. Plant selection including earthmoving equipment, tunnelling, cranage;

  • Construction Control.

Assessment:

One two hour written examination (60%) Two 2000 word assignments or equivalent (40%)
