421-350 Management For Engineers 2

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course students will:

  • have a basic understanding of the legal framework within which engineers must practice;

  • be aware of the engineer's social and ethical responsibilities in both employment and professional practice;

  • have developed communication skills leading to professional presentations and commercial negotiations.

Content:

  • Introduction to law. Contract. Tort. Project delivery systems and engineering contracts. Liability and intellectual property. Corporations law. Environmental law;

  • Origins and development of Australian engineering organisations. The engineer and professional practice. Professional ethics and engineers. The functions of the professional societies. Engineers in government - national, state and local. Environmental Management;

  • Environmental Management Systems including consideration of the ISO 14 000 series requirements. Environmental Effects Statements.

  • Marketing theory and business development. Professional services presentation and registrations of interest. Technical communication skills. Technical and commercial negotiation.

Assessment:

A two-hour examination (70%) and one 3000 word assignment or equivalent (30%).
