421-312 Structural Steel Theory and Design

Credit Points:

7.1

Coordinator:

Dr Helen Goldsworthy

Prerequisite/s:

421-310 Structural Analysis 1 (or equivalent)

Timetable:

Semester 2

Contact:

26 lectures and 13 practice classes or design classes

Objectives:

At the completion of this subject students will be able to apply the theory of the subject 421-281 (Mechanics of Solids 2) to the standard rolled steel sections. They will understand the behaviour of such sections and how that behaviour is taken into account in modern design. They will be able to carry out computations for the various limit states of a range of fabricated steel sections. They will be able to design simple fasteners and simple groups of fasteners.

Content:

Modelling of the basic modes of structural action; behaviour (first order and second order) of ties, columns, beams, beam-columns, simple frames, bolts, welds and fasteners groups including yielding, fracture, buckling and warping.

Assessment:

One two hour written examination paper.
