421-281 Mechanics of Solids 2

21 hours of lectures, 10 hours of practice classes, 8 hours of laboratory work

Objectives:

This subject builds on the basic knowledge obtained in Mechanics of Solids 1. The techniques of analysis developed in this subject will be applied in later years of the course when designing structural elements.

Content:

Properties of Sections and Unsymmetrical Bending, Composite Beams, Shear Centre, Virtual Work, Flexural Deflections, Reciprocity, Indeterminacy, Plastic Behaviour of Structures, Uniform and Non-uniform Torsion, Lateral torsional buckling of beams, Torsional and local buckling of columns.

Assessment:

one two-hour written examination (75%); Practice classes and Laboratory work (25%).
