Objectives: | By completing this subject/unit, the student will develop skills in conceptual design of civil engineering facilities in all forms of infrastructure. They will understand the process of detailing a conceptual design; they will know the sources and scale of uncertainties and variability encountered in civil engineering design; they will understand the philosophies of design used to facilitate the planning of economical and reliable systems; they will appreciate the main communication media of design including regulations, codes and standards, design computer packages, and the conventions of computation and drawing. The students will appreciate the capacities and limitations of civil engineering materials and the forms of civil engineering systems. | |
Content: | Infrastructure and natural systems. Economy and life-cycles costs. Planning and designing. Design objectives: function; aesthetics; costs; serviceability; safety. Analysis and synthesis. Conceptual design. Uncertainties: variably; inaccuracy; mistakes. Standardisation of materials, load calculations and procedures. Government and other regulation. Philosophies of design: Allowable Stress design; Limit States design. Detailing and documentation: computations and iterative design; design and CAD packages; drawing conventions. | |
Assessment: | one two-hour written examination paper (75%); two assignments of approximately 10 pages each (25%) | |
