421-201 Introduction to Mechanics of Solids

Objectives:

Aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of stress analysis. On completion students should be able to understand elastic and inelastic behaviour, determine stresses and deflections in common structural elements such as circular shafts, beams and columns and estimate the loads at which they will either yield, fail or buckle.

Content:

Two dimensional stress and strain analysis, principal values, Mohr's circles, thin rings and cylinders, failure criteria. Basic properties of sections, symmetrical bending. Flexure, elastic and inelastic. Deflection, double integration, strain energy methods, superposition, reciprocity. Indeterminacy. Shear stresses in beams. Torsion of circular shafts, elastic and inelastic. Short and long columns, inelastic behaviour.

Assessment:

Laboratory/tutorial work, assignments and tests not exceeding 20 pages equivalent. A three-hour examination.
