421-150 Introduction to Engineering Management

Objectives:

At the completion of this unit students should:

  • know why engineers need also to be managers;

  • have an understanding of the fundamentals of management skills as they apply to the engineering profession;

  • have an appreciation of the skills that collectively contribute to the management process.

Content:

Why engineers need also to be managers: engineering combines technology, business and management. The commercial and competitive context of engineering. The need for marketing orientation and financial evaluation. Australian engineering in the world context. Introduction to the management process, embracing planning, organisation, leadership and control of human, physical and financial resources, and the social responsibility, professional liability and occupational health and safety aspects of engineering practice. Engineers and the scientific management movement. Schools of management thought.

Assessment:

a two-hour examination (60%) and one 2000 word assignment (40%)
