Objectives:

Students completing this subject will:

  • have an appreciation of the management of safety and hazard aspects associated with process design;

  • have an appreciation of the character of technology;

  • have an appreciation of Best Practice in Engineering;

  • have an appreciation of environmental management.

Content:

  • Technical Safety. Hazard identification and Hazard and Operability Studies. Risk assessment. Hazard management.

  • The character of technology. Inventions, innovations and research and development. Technology associated with new products, new processes and process improvements.

  • Mission statements. Teamwork, human resources and industrial relations. Bench-marking. Key performance indicators.

  • Management to comply with environmental legislation, environmental audits, environmental impact assessments. Waste minimisation.

Assessment:

Assignments up to 10,000 words in total.
