Objectives:

At the completion of this subject students will:

  • have a basic understanding of the legal framework within which engineers must practise;

  • be aware of the engineer's social and ethical responsibilities in both employment and professional practice;

  • have developed communication skills leading to professional presentations and commercial negotiations.

Content:

Introduction to law. Contract. Tort. Project delivery systems and engineering contracts. Liability and intellectual property. Corporations law. Patent law. Origins and development of Australian engineering organisations. The engineer and professional practice. Professional ethics and engineers. The functions of the professional societies. Engineers in government - national, state and local. Environmental Management Systems including consideration of the ISO 14 000 series requirements. Environmental Effects Statements. Environmental Management Systems including consideration of the ISO 14 000 series requirements. Environmental Effects Statements. Marketing theory and business development. Professional services presentation and registrations of interest. Technical communication skills. Technical and commercial negotiation.

Assessment:

One 2-hour written examination (70%). One 3000 word assignment or equivalent (30%).
