Content: | Small particle statistics, shape factors, types of mean size and distribution, principles of size measurement. Mixing solids, random mix, mixing index, mixing rate. Voidage of mixtures. Screening and separation efficiency. Change of size, comminution, granulation, crystallisation. Fluid-particle dynamics, free settling terminal velocity, simple cyclone design, equi-settling particles. Change of velocity, fluid impulse, jigging and tabling. Change of mass. Electrostatic precipitation. Flow through packed beds, pressure drop, dead-end filtration. Fluidisation, minimum fluidising velocity, bed expansion, distribution design. Dynamics of gas and liquid fluidised beds.
Assessment: | Two class tests during First Semester, each of 50 minutes duration and each contributing 15% to the final mark, as well as a 2-hour examination at the end of First Semester, contributing 70% to the final mark.
