411-204 Process Engineering Management 1

Satisfactory completion of 618-171 Mathematics 1P and 618-172 Mathematics 1Q or equivalent.

Semester 1

Contact:

The total contact hours over the semester will be 39, comprising three hours each week. The unit will consist of about 30 lectures with the balance of the time being tutorials

Objectives:

Students completing this unit will:

  • be able to undertake a basic economic assessment of a process;

  • have an understanding of the financial structure of organisations and of financial accounts;

  • have an understanding of simple cost accounting;

  • be able to undertake simple project planning.

Content:

Patterns of cash flow in a project, profitability, cash flow and the time value of money. Cost estimation. Alternative investments. Risk and uncertainty.

Companies, partnerships, joint ventures. Sources of funds, shares, gearing, financial ratios. Balance sheets, profit and loss statements, cash forecasts. Introduction to taxation.

Elementary cost accounting, budgets and variance analysis.

Scheduling, bar charts, simple critical path analysis.

Assessment:

A 2-hour examination at the end of semester.
