411-104 Process Engineering 1

Prerequisite/s:

None for students gaining entry to the Engineering or Science Faculties. However, 411-102 CPA1 is recommended. This unit is also available for Community Access Programmes.

Timetable:

Semester 2

Contact:

39 hours for the semester consisting of 1 hour of lectures per week and 2 hours of assignments per week

Objectives:

students completing this unit will:

  • be familiar with a PC;

  • have an understanding of the operating systems DOS and WINDOWS;

  • be able to use the software packages EXCEL and CHEMCAD for simple chemical process engineering assignments.

Content:

Introduction to the PC; the DOS operating system; the WINDOWS operating system; the use of EXCEL for spreadsheet chemical engineering calculations; the use of CHEMCAD for process flowsheet design. Assignments will be of two hours' duration and will introduce ill-defined process engineering problems and include about 7 computer-based exercises.

Assessment:

This unit is continuously assessed via about 7 assignments each equivalent to no more than 1000 words.
