400-120 Introduction to Engineering

39 hours of lectures, tutorials, practical classes, site visits and/or field work

Objectives:

On completion students should have gained:

  • insight into one or more facets or engineering practice and research;

  • foreknowledge of topics studied in depth in later years of engineering courses, and an appreciation of the underlying theory and associated instrumentation and computer processes;

  • skills in the extraction and summarising of cited material from library resources;

  • skills in report and essay writing on technical matters.

Content:

The introduction to the history, theory and practice associated with an essential topic in chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, mechanical or manufacturing engineering; use of supporting instrumentation or computer processes; review or current publication of research and application in industry. Details of topics to be presented in a particular year will be published at the start of that academic year.

Assessment:

Written reports of no more than 10 pages, an essay of no more than 2000 words.
