Philosophy

Students are introduced to a range of thoughtful responses to enduring human problems and to rational methods for evaluating argument about them. Philosophical perspectives in education are also taught within the structure of all the BEd programs and at postgraduate levels. This work is mostly offered on an integrated basis in the professional studies component of Education Studies.

In 1997 second year Philosophy is the responsibility of the Faculty of Arts, and the Faculty of Education is responsible for some third year subjects. You can also consider enrolling in second and third year Philosophy subjects taught by the Philosophy Department (Arts Faculty). Students who wish to secure a major study in Philosophy will take, in addition to 25.0 points of Year 1 subjects, at least 33.3 points at each of Year 2 (B-level) and Year 3 (C-level). Students completing 33.3 points at B-level are eligible to undertake the Teaching Method in Social Studies.

The prerequisite for entry to Philosophy C subjects is 33.3 points at B-level, or an approved equivalent. Apart from C90 (Project Studies) the content of C-level subjects is identical to B-level subjects; thus Philosophy C14 has the same title, syllabus and points value as Philosophy B14, although students taking C-level subjects will be expected to meet appropriately higher standards of assessment. Credit will not be granted for any C-level subject as well as for its B-level counterpart (for example, for both Philosophy B14 and C14).

For all Philosophy subjects you should note that, in addition to required lectures, seminars, tutorials and assessment tasks, a significant amount of reading will be expected to be undertaken outside class contact time.
