Handbook 1997 : Faculty of Education : Greek
The Modern Greek program is offered by the Department of Language Studies in the Faculty of Arts. The program concentrates on the literature, culture, society, history and language of contemporary Greece, Cyprus and Greeks in Australia. Study of the language may commence at Beginners, Intermediate or Advanced level or in selected domains of usage (formal, informal and colloquial, katharevousa, government, business, medical and legal). Original literary and other texts are examined in Modern Greek Poetry, Prose Fiction, Folk Literature, Theatre, and the Language Controversy. Non-language subjects include Mythologies: Literature, History and Society in Modern Greece, Greek Australian Literature, and The Greeks in Australia (Modern Greek.
You must contact the Department before enrolling, in order to determine which language stream or level you should enrol in. Placement will be based on your VCE results, other language study record or a placement test. High school graduates from Greece or Cyprus, or those with an A+ VCE result, should enrol in two of the post-advanced language subjects (150-185 and 150-171). However, your enrolment will remain provisional until confirmed or, alternatively, altered in the light of new evidence that might emerge during the first weeks of teaching. As far as possible, changes will be notified in the first two weeks of the semester.
